Mass Appeal

Cambridge Brewing Co., Mystic Brewery, Enlightenment Ales, Idle Hands Craft Ales, and Night Shift Brewing present:
Mass Appeal

What better way to celebrate Boston Beer week, we decided, than to invite our newest friends and neighbors in the Boston brewing scene to join us in a collaborative brewing session. A flurry of emails and a couple meetings later, and we had all agreed upon a fun recipe and a date to brew.

Everyone met here at CBC to create Mass Appeal, a strong blonde ale brewed with malted barley and wheat from our friends at Valley Malt, fresh zest from nearly a dozen different citrus fruits plus their juice, Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Styrian Aurora and Sorachi Ace hops, and homemade invert sugar syrup boiled up on the CBC patio.

Further collaboration took place between our respective yeast friends, as each brewery contributed a yeast strain and all of them pitched in together in our tank to ferment this beer. At fermentation’s end the beer was dryhopped with more Nelson Sauvin hops, providing a complex but soft fruitiness that works beautifully with the bright notes from the citrus fruit.

Bright gold in color with assertive carbonation, this light-colored beer packs a punch of complexity. Top notes of lime, orange, and grapefruit citrus meld with exotic hop character reminiscent of passionfruit, flowers, and white wine grapes. Dry on the palate but full-bodied, rich malt flavors provide a grounding balance to the perceived sweetness contributed by fruit and hops.  Under it all, a harmonizing contribution from our mixed yeast strains offers spiciness and further complexity.

We’d like to thank the brewers who gathered with us to brew this beer, and celebrate the camaraderie which is unique to our industry.
Support local beer and the great folks who brew!

Happy Boston Beer Week 2012!
