Never Mind The Bollekes!
Release Date: Friday, June 24, 2011
In 1977 the Sex Pistols released their only official album with Johnny Rotten, and were immediately met with a hail of controversy and legal troubles.
Obscenity charges were levied against the album title, which were reluctantly dropped. Even more outrage was sparked by the lyrics of the songs ‘God Save the Queen’ and ‘Anarchy in the U.K.’ which were perceived as depraved assaults on the monarchy, civil society, and the social order, decency, and morality in general.
Fun stuff!
In 2009 CBC first released Never Mind the Bollekes, and the brewstaff anticipated similar controversy and legal troubles dependant upon the litigious intent of the brewery to which we attempted to pay homage. No such “lawyering up” took place, so we’ve gone and brewed it again!
Inspiration:
In Antwerp, Belgium, lies the world-famous De Koninck Brewery, home to an exceptional amber ale eponymously named. This 5%abv Belgian ale boasts clean notes of caramel and toasted malt with a kiss of spicy hop character to balance. It is served traditionally in a distinctively stemmed, spherical glass known as a bolleke. Perhaps unique in the beer world, the beer is so closely identified in its native Antwerp with its special stemmed glass, that the term bolleke is most colloquially used to refer to a glass filled with the beer itself! In other words, one never orders ‘a glass of DeKoninck,’ one just orders ‘a bolleke.’
The Beer:
Wishing to avoid inciting a copyright infringement lawsuit, we’ve decided against serving our Belgian pale ale in a similar goblet, and instead you’ll find it gracing the flared bowl of our traditional tulip glass. Bright, deep golden in color, Never Mind the Bollekes has a fresh nose of fruity Begian yeast and spicy hop character. Medium-bodied, the flavors of pilsner and Munich-style malt balance deftly with spicy and floral hops of the varieties Glacier, Hallertauer, and Spalt. Hoppier than the Antwerpen amber ale we so admire, it is also of such a sessionable nature that it can be enjoyed throughout an evening’s conversation. Or in the midst of your favorite mosh pit. We continue to hope our Antwerpen brewing brethren have a sense of humor about this!
