Our 23rd Anniversary Beer
‘My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Percy Shelley’s sonnet, memorized in our collective grammar school youth,
lay dormant in the brain until your brewmaster came upon it a couple years ago. The poem, inspired by the statue of Egypt’s Ramesses II, tells of the inevitable decline of all rulers and empires. Diodorus Siculus’ original inscription on the foot of the statue goes “King of Kings am I, Osymandias. If anyone would know how great I am and where I lie, let him surpass one of my works.”
Pretty badass, no?
Which got us to thinking – what kind of beer could we brew taking into consideration this quote? Huge body. Strong, certainly. Probably very strong. Well aged, and able to stand the test of time. And definitely badass.
What we came up with, as we looked toward CBC’s 23rd anniversary (also extremely badass) is an insanely complex beer in both ingredients and production.
A very strong dark base beer was brewed, and during fermentation by six different yeast strains we continually fed the yeast more and more fermentables, in the form of organic fruit concentrates and sugar. The beer was constantly roused to ensure the yeast stayed suspended and didn’t decide the party was over too soon.
After weeks of fermentation and a whopping 15% abv the beer was sent to the CBC Barrel Cellar to age in red wine and bourbon barrels for six months.
Now, on our 23rd Anniversary, we release it for your enjoyment. Extremely rich and dark with interplay between raisiny malt flavors, sweet and quite sour berry notes of currant and elder, hints of toast and smoky oak, and a very smooth port wine-like finish. As we acknowledge our past and look forward to the next 23 years at CBC, we hope you’ll raise a glass to great beer, creativity and innovation,
and good old fashioned badassed-ness.
Happy 23rd Anniversary!
