Thetford Special Rye

This beer is “Special” not only because it is brewed with a specially malted grain -rye- but because we have hopped and dry-hopped with fresh hop flowers from Thetford, Vermont.

“What’s so special about hops from Thetford, Vermont?” you ask.

“Well,” I reply, not so patronizingly as you might think, “I’ll tell you…”

New England was once the greatest producer of hops in the western hemisphere, but production dropped off and finally ceased due to crop disease and pests. Now virtually all of the hops used here at Cambridge Brewing Company come from the Pacific Northwest. For the first time in over 100 years, hop fields are under cultivation in a little town up in Vermont, and we’re the first craft brewers in the greater Cambridge-Boston area to use them.

“Enuf history, already!” you say, “What’s it taste like?”

“It tastes, well, hoppy, with citrus and floral and a little spiciness in the aroma and flavor, balanced by a unique maltiness often characterized as nutty or toasty. Golden-hued and hazy, light-to-medium bodied, with a crisp, dry finish.

We’re serving it unfiltered to showcase the character of this exceptional New England
first. Enjoy!”

Cheers,
Will, Lauren, and Phil
